About

Angela Giulia Toso
Originally from Lavagna (Genoa), she graduated in Economics at Genoa University. At the same time, she studied Costume and Set Design and she earned a BA from Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara and Verona Opera Academy in Verona.

In 2007 she began working in children's theatre and in drama with various professional teams and here she had the opportunity to build an artisanal, concrete knowledge of the theatrical craft.

In 2013 she approached the opera and here she continued her career first in the role of costume supervisor in many production of As.Li.Co (Lombardy opera house circuit) and Compagnia Italiana di Operette, later as costume designer assistant in important national and international theatres and festival including: La Fenice in Venice, Rossini Theatre in Pesaro, Teatro Due in Parma, Festival d'Art Lyrique in Aix en Provence, Sferisterio in Macerata, Incolballet dance Festival in Cali.

Since 2017 she has established a constant collaboration as costume designer collaborator with Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and she has supports many great artists.
Following the experiences gained, she feels the ever stronger need to deepen in the study of the scenic space, inseparable from the study of the character and since 2017 she has also been involved in set design, dedicating herself to the development and staging of personal projects.
In 2015 she was costume designer for Le nozze di Figaro (directed by Neil Barry Moss and Christian Rivero) at Teatro Rossini in Pesaro, in 2017 she was costume designer for La Bohème (directed by Bruno Ravella) at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, in 2018 she was set and costume designer for pocket operas: Don Pasquale (directed by Kathleen Stakenas), La fanciulla del West (directed by Brenda Harris), Bernstein à la carte (directed by Roberto Recchia) at Wexford Festival Opera, in 2019 she was costume designer for the contemporary opera Noi... due, quattro (directed by Elisa Fuksas) at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Since 2023 she has collaborated with the Puccini Festival Foundation in the technical dpt.

Since 2024 she has taught Costume History at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice.

"In my creative process the starting point is always the text to be staged. There is everything there.
My set design wants to create a welcoming space for the characters who will live there. It wants to represent its characters and the history. My set design wants to create the feeling of a defined space without fully representing it. It wants to suggest more than show.
The costumes that my characters will wear want to live on the performers, they want to blend perfectly with their bodies and their personalities and become characters with them.
In my theatre the imagination of the audience completes the work. With my research I aim to simulate the imagination of those who attend the representation through suggestions, images and to make them an active part of the magic itself.
With kindness and courage"
